Tracy Kidder's latest book is the story of Deo, a young student of medicine in Burundi who gets caught up in the ethnic violence ravaging the country. On the run for half a year, saved by a woman who claimed to be his mother, he finds his way to New York and begins life as an illegal immigrant, working for poverty wages, sleeping in whatever shelter he can find, recalling his university life with longing. With the help of benefactors, Deo is able to graduate from Columbia and attend Dartmouth Medical School, and to return, eventually, to Burundi and build a health clinic. Tracy Kidder, whose Mountains Beyond Mountains inspired so many people, has done it again.
