In Legacy of a False Promise: A Daughter's Reckoning, Margaret Fuchs Singer recounts her first awareness that her parents had been Communists, and her distress at learning that her father had appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee and named names. He subsequently lost his job because of his Communist affiliation.  In the prevailing anti-Communist climate she was shunned by neighbors, even as she felt her father's shame at having betrayed friends when others had not. She tells this story both from the point of view of the vulnerable daughter she was then, and also from that of an adult looking back dispassionately at the role of Communism in American life at mid-century.
