Journalist Daniel Okrent, who's served as an editor at Time and Life Magazines and as the first Public Editor of the New York Times, is best known in this area as the co-founder of the late, great New England Monthly. He's written several previous books, among them The Ultimate Baseball Book and Great Fortune: The Epic of Rockefeller Center.
His new book on Prohibition has garnered splendid reviews. It sketches the social context of Prohibition, the alliances among diverse groups that helped push it through, and why it failed. This is absorbing, in-depth social history at its best.
(Daniel Okrent was scheduled to appear at Broadside on July 7. Because he got tapped for the Daily Show that day, he was unable to be with us at that time.)
