Dying in Full Detail: Mortality and  Digital Documentary

Jennifer Malkowski

Dying in Full Detail analyzes how death has been documented historically, from mid-nineteenth century mourning photographs to #BlackLivesMatter videos on YouTube. It explores the ways in which technology has altered the practice of recording death, what digital technologies reveal about death  and whether death can reveal something about the digital .

Jennifer Malkowski is Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies at Smith College. She is particularly interested in the links between “old” and new media and the way new technologies reshape—or fail to reshape—social and political power.  She has been published in Jump Cut, Film Quarterly, the collection Queers in American Popular Culture, and a collection she co-edited, Gaming Representation: Race, Gender and Sexuality in Video Games.
