THE HOT ONE
Carolyn Murnick's new memoir chronicles the complexities of her relationship with Ashley, her best friend from childhood. Ashely and Carolyn are inseparable but very different: Ashley early on began to be aware of and to exploit her sexuality; Carolyn was the quieter, more thoughtful and academically successful one. The two take different paths in late adolescence, meeting up again only to realize that their differences are almost unbridgeable. And then, shockingly, Ashley becomes the victim of a murder, and Carolyn tries to track down the circumstances that led to that unimaginable outcome. Heartfelt but unsentimental, meticulously written, sometimes astonishing, The Hot One is a memoir that stands out in a crowded field.
Carolyn will present the book in conversation with her friend Brooke Hauser, culture editor of the Daily Hampshire Gazette and author of Enter Helen.
