48 PEAKS: HIKING AND HEALING IN THE WHITE MOUNTAINS
In her 48th year, Cheryl Suchors vowed to climb--eventually-- the highest 48 peaks in the White Mountains, in defiance of a bad knee, fear of heights, and scoliosis. All to give her a sense of mastery, control and accomplishment as she approaches 50.
Between hikes over the next ten years that it takes to complete her quest, she develops breast cancer and endures chemotherapy, and her hiking partner succumbs to ovarian cancer. But whenever she can, she returns to the mountains. Over time she finds that mastery and control are less important in her life than the solace provided by simply being in nature, and by hiking companions and other friends along the way.
CHERYL SUCHORS graduated from Smith and Harvard Business School and has written poetry fiction and essays and. She continues to hike, most recently in Poland and Canada.
