Silver Beach is a novel about the impact of a family tragedy. Mara is a child when her older sister drowns at Silver Beach in California. After the accident, Mara's father takes her across the country to western Massachusetts, while her half-sister Shannon stays behind with their alcoholic mother Linda. As years go by, the lives of the two half-sisters diverge dramatically: Mara makes a good life for herself; Shannon's life looks very different. When the two sisters meet after their mother's heart attack years later, Mara is forced to come to terms with feelings she has suppressed for years.
Silver Beach is a winner of the University of Massachusetts Juniper Prize for fiction.
