THE CAPTIVES--DEBRA JO IMMERGUT
In Debra Immergut's new novel, a prison psychologist named Frank Lundquist encounters a woman--Miranda Greene-- who was the object of his daydreams in high school, but is now, to his astonishment, an inmate in the prison. He remembers her; she doesn't recognize him. The gritty world of the prison, and Miranda's determination to survive there, are vividly rendered, as is Frank's complex moral dilemma, which grows more acute as the story progresses. The Captives is deftly paced and tautly written, suspenseful all the way to its amazing conclusion.
Debra Jo Immergut is the author of the short story collection Private Property. She is a veteran magazine writer/editor and journalist, and holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
