SHORES BEYOND SHORES: FROM HOLOCAUST TO HOPE
MY TRUE STORY
BY IRENE BUTTER
WITH CO-AUTHORS KRIS HOLLOWAY & JOHN BIDWELL
Irene Butter is one of the few living Holocaust survivors, and Shores Beyond Shores is the story of how she survived. Her childhood, already hemmed in by the restrictions against Jews in occupied Amsterdam, was forever changed when the Dutch police came for her family. Shores Beyond Shores chronicles their sojourn in a death camp, as Irene struggles to care for her sick parents and others in the camp. Then a chance for for freedom comes, and their fate becomes dizzyingly uncertain. The story of the family's redemption from horror and Irene's new life in the Algerian desert is among the most moving memoirs in recent memory.
Irene Butter has appeared with the Dalai Lama, Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu, and other activists for peace.
Kris Hollowayholds an MPH from the University of Michigan. She is the author of the critically acclaimed Monique and the Mango Rains, a moving portrait of a midwife in Mali, where Kris worked as a Peace Corps volunteer.
