Peter Gould Presents His Memoir, Horse-Drawn Yogurt, Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 pm

Horse-Drawn Yogurt

Stories from Total Loss Farm

In 1969, Peter Gould moved to Total Loss Farm in Vermont as part of the back-to-the-land movement. The stories in Horse Drawn Yogurt offer  glimpses into the communal life there: the hard work of learning the rudiments of farming with the help of the locals, but also plenty of  smoking, dancing, and enjoying the freedom of being young in the countryside and the satisfaction of being part of national movement for peace and justice.

Peter Gould wrote the legendary back-to-the-land novel Burnt Toast (Alfred A. Knopf)—the first fictional treatment of the 1970s commune movement in New England. Peter’s young adult novel, Write Naked (Farrar Straus) won the 2009 Green Earth Book Award. Gould leads a life of writing, directing, performing, gardening, teaching, and political activism. He has taught Peace, Conflict and Coexistence Studies at Brandeis. Novelist Howard Norman says of him, "

Peter Gould—playwright, novelist, Shakespearean scholar, director, all around literary provocateur—is one of the most fearless writers alive. Gould is the dramaturge of our wordly problems and sense of wondrous possibility—he is a national treasure.”
